Display the folder path in Windows Explorer title bar

You can configure Windows Explorer to show the full path in the folder’s title bar. This will make it easier for you to determine what folder you are opening. Because if you have more than one folder on your computer with the same name it can be difficult to figure out the file path of your currently opened folder.

Here is how to display the folder path in Windows Explorer’s title bar.

1. Open any folder in Windows Explorer.

2. Choose “Tools” then “Folder Options”.

3. Select the “View” tab.

4. Check “Display the full path in the title bar”.

5. Click “Apply” and then “OK”.

How to backup Outlook Express

As important as it is to backup the files and directories on your computer it is just as important to backup Outlook Express. The program I use, Outlook Express Backup Wizard, will back up your email, news messages, folder structure, attachments, identities, address book, signatures, and much more. There’s an easy to use interface and the ability to password protect your backups. You can also restore your backups if the need should arise.

In this tutorial I’ll show you how.

Here you choose whether to perform a backup or a restore of your Outlook Express.

Oebw1

You can backup multiple identities simultaneously or if you prefer create a backup for each identity. At this step you also need to pick the items you wish to preserve.

Oebw2

Enter any filename you wish here or use the default filename the wizard composes from the current date. You can protect your backup file with a password.

Oebw3

I highly suggest that you save your backup file to a CD or a removable drive. Do not just save the file on your desktop for example, a system crash will render that useless.

Importing and exporting your Outlook Express contacts

There will come a time when you will need to import and export your Outlook Express contacts. And what I mean by contacts is your address book. This can occur when you wish to have your contacts available on another computer of yours, your children’s computer, or you simply need to transfer your settings over to the new computer that you just purchased.

In the following tutorial I will explain how to do this. It is actually quite simple just relax and take your time and everything will be all right.

Exporting contacts from Outlook Express:

  •   Open your Outlook Express e-mail client.
  •   Click the Addresses button from the menu. It should be next to  Send/Recv
  •   Click File–> Export–> Address Book
  •   Browse to the location you would like to save the file to and then  save the file. The file will be saved in My Documents by default with a WAB extension. You can of course choose your own location.

Importing contacts back to Outlook Express:

  •   Open your Outlook Express e-mail client.
  •   Click File–> Import–> Address Book
  •   Browse to the file (WAB extension) you saved in the step above,  select it and click Open.

Is your computer slowing down?

If you find yourself getting frustrated and annoyed at your slow computer, you are not alone. Most PC owners are likely to face problems sooner or later. Often within a few months of buying a PC, you may notice that it is not performing like new. Unfortunately, most people do nothing until their PC becomes frustratingly slow and leads to a major loss in productivity.

Even if you’re extremely careful about how you use your computer and never download questionable material, over time it is inevitable that your system will accumulate unwanted registry entries, errors, clutter and debris. While some of the slowing down of your computer can be attributed to the burden on its resources, most of the time, computer slowdowns are just symptoms of some other underlying issue. You can go a long way towards preventing these slowdowns and take care of most PC problems on your own if you take care of things yourself.

The most common causes are the installation and removal of software, online games, application crashes and upgrades of software programs. Also, your computer is likely experiencing problems with its registry database, the operating system component that stores information about the system, application settings and hardware.

Clean and defrag your hard drive: Your hard disk starts getting cluttered from the day you start working on a new computer as all kinds of data gets continuously added and deleted from it. After a while, it may be difficult to find anything on your hard disk. This situation can be avoided by using the Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter tools. While the former will help you get rid of unnecessary clutter, the latter will help you reorganize the files in your hard disk to make them faster to access. These are system tools provided by your operating system and they go a long way in making your system fast. There are also many free and paid disk defragmenter tools available should you go that route.

On a personal note though not considered a disk defragmenter tool I use these two fine programs to help keep the clutter from browser activity, normal computer usage, etc.. to a minimum.

CCleaner

CleanUp!

Install programs carefully: It is easy to get carried away and install many new and exciting applications on your computer. The flip side of this is that every time you do that you put an additional burden on your computer. Also, each of these applications bring along their own specific bugs and errors. Make sure you install application which you are sure to use and uninstall unwanted ones immediately. You can use the Add/Remove Programs utility available in your Control Panel to achieve this. If the software is large or if there are some problems with the un-installation process, you may use a good, third-party program uninstaller tool to do the job.

Keep the registry optimized: It has been observed that slow computers tend to have bloated and cluttered windows registries. In addition to the bad performance of your PC, an unhealthy registry is known to cause numerous registry errors and disrupt your work. Therefore, you must maintain a healthy windows registry. This can be achieved either by manually editing your registry or by simply downloading a popular registry cleaner from the Internet. I’ve used many registry cleaners and I must strongly advise against manual editing of the registry unless you are sure of what you are doing. Otherwise you can render your computer inoperable.

Here is the application that I like to use for a nice optimized registry.

iTunes Lyrics Importer puts song lyrics in iTunes

Besides the album art how would you like to have the song lyrics for your iTunes music files? With the free iTunes Lyrics Importer this is possible. If applicable uninstall any previous version, download the latest version and install.

There are two modes, update automatically or manual.

Ituneslyrics  The update automatically mode will only show the results while the manual mode will show the lyrics from the Lyricswiki project database. The manual mode will also show the album art if found and allow for editing of lyrics.

Because of the project’s huge resource it’s likely that you’ll find lyrics to obscure songs as opposed to the mainstream. That being said pick your mode carefully. If you update automatically there is a possibility that similiar (but wrong) lyrics will be found and overwrite your currect lyrics.

Only available for Windows.

Microsoft may drop Vista

All Vista support will end April 2012 but more than likely sales of the software will end before that.

Windows Vista wallpaper (by Microsoft)

With the impending release of Windows 7 expected to take place in time for the holidays. It appears Vista’s days are numbered.

Vista never turned out as planned by Microsoft. With it’s bloated code and security holes many consumers and businesses shied away. While many others went back to Windows XP after encountering numerous problems with the Vista operating system.
